Kayaking by Öddö and Tjärnö

Lagunen has two sandy beaches from which you can easily launch your kayak. From here it is easy and convenient to get in and out of your vessel. This route heads in a westerly direction through the shallow and narrow sound of Trälsund, where oysters and mussels cover the entire seabed. You may be lucky enough to see a brown trout spawning in the fast-running stream. Between Daftön and Öddö is a small channel, just wide enough for a kayak. Soon afterwards you glide through the first culvert connecting the islands. The route then follows the eastern side of Öddö upwards, towards Tjärnö. Turn off before the bridge and round the island of Gullnäsholmen. So far, you have mainly travelled through waters where only kayaks can pass. You now turn back towards Lagunen.

Which map application do you use?

Lagunen has decided to focus on three apps, which we find work well in our area. All have useful free versions available, although a paid subscription obviously means more features. You can also download the GPX file to your own favourite app. In addition, our reception sells a useful leisure map, scale 1:50,000.

  • Viewranger: This app has a good user interface and useful map functions. Originally designed for hiking and navigating in forests and nature. Easy to create trips and plan routes. We use it mainly for hiking and trail riding. Integrates with Openstreetmap, which is very up-to-date in our area.
  • Trailforks: This is home turf for trail riders. The app is a meeting place for anyone who enjoys cycling in woodland. Free maps make it easy to find good trail riding routes.
  • Strava: This app has been around for a long time and has many users in our area. This means that it is very up-to-date and includes recommendations for both road cycling and mountain biking.

Circumnavigate Starholmen – explore our island

Lagunen has two sandy beaches from which you can easily launch your kayak. From here it is easy and convenient to get in and out of your vessel. Starholmen is the island on the opposite side of the water from Lagunen. A trip around this island offers sheltered bays and amazingly pretty seaside environments. Our recommended route starts by travelling west through Trälsund, where trout spawn in the streaming water. The sound is shallow and only the smallest of boats can get through. Keep Starholmen on your right. When you reach the western side of the island and are ready to turn back towards Lagunen, take a detour into Stigfjorden, which is part of northern Öddö. On the way back, you pass Tankarna, where Strömstad locals traditionally catch mackerel. We have caught thousands of fish here over the years. Don’t forget to visit the inner parts of the little island before heading back to Lagunen.

Coffee and kayaking by Tjärnö Laboratory

Lagunen has two sandy beaches from which you can easily launch your kayak. From here it is easy and convenient to get in and out of your vessel. This slightly longer route takes you on an adventure comprising oyster beds, mussel farms, and marine science & research. The initial stage heads in a southerly direction, with Tjärnö to the right. You soon turn west and use the islands for shelter as you travel towards Tjärnö Laboratory. The final stretch towards the canal is open to south-westerly winds. On a windy day, you may encounter some waves here.
You have now reached Tjärnö Laboratory, which is a great place to stop and enjoy a picnic. The research aquarium is open in the summer, so take the opportunity to pat a king crab and learn what lobsters get up to under the surface. After recharging your batteries, you set out on the return trip, which runs via a culvert at Lindholmen, before turning back towards Lagunen.
